James Pellow

James Pellow played multiple roles during his time at Packs, beginning in the Men’s Department and later moving to “The Coffee Bean” Coffee Shop.

He started working at Packs in 1975 when the Cross Street shop opened. James described his job as a traditional, formal experience, where he interacted with customers in a polite, courteous manner. His responsibilities included managing and organising the clothing, maintaining its presentation and assisting with customer service, especially in men’s suits and formalwear.

After a few years, James transitioned to work at The Coffee Bean, the popular social hub located on the first floor of the store. In this role, James prepared simple food items, including his well-known flapjacks, and served coffee to customers in a relaxed and friendly environment. The Coffee Bean became a key gathering place for regulars, creating a tight-knit community. James described his interactions with customers with warmth and humor, and he particularly enjoyed the vibrant social atmosphere.

James also played the role of Father Christmas in the store’s Grotto during the holiday season, an experience he very much enjoyed. After the closure of Packs, James moved on to pursue a career in theatre, attending drama school and participating in summer repertory theatre in Devon.
