About the Packs' People project
If you’ve ever wondered what it must be like working at Packs, this heritage project sheds light on some of your unanswered questions.
The project team were lucky enough to spend time with a range of people who used to work and shop at Packs, to hear their stories and memories from the golden age of department stores.
The Dream Team
The project is the brainchild of the team at Department; Artistic Director, Paul McLaren; Creative Director, Sharon George; Technical Director, Martin Sheaff; Programming Manager, Joe Plumb and Outreach and Events Manager, Lily George. As well as Rosemary Richards, as Chair of Shademakers UK CIC.
Their vision to transform this former department store into a cultural hub for all, whilst acknowledging the importance of the building’s heritage has been achieved through their hard work and and dogged determination.
Oral history interviews and website design and build by Meeja.
Portraits were shot by Isle of Wight photographer, Julian Winslow. Additional graphics supplied by Lindsay Robertson from Words & Stuff. Thanks are extended to Bex Swan from Network Ryde for use of the youth centre during the portrait shoot.
Funding and support
The project has become a reality thanks to funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, ensuring the heritage of Packs is celebrated and protected for future generations.
Department has been created in partnership with the Isle of Wight Council, Arts Council England, Historic England and will open as an arts and cultural space for the whole community in early 2025.
